Principal’s Message

Tena Koutou Katoa    Talofa Lava     Kamusta    Malo e lelei    Mauri     Malo ni     Faka talofa atu    Namaste   Greetings to all

Over the last few weeks we were fortunate to have the Life Education mobile classroom in the school. All children were given the opportunity to experience this wonderful resource that provided our students with valuable insights into the different concepts of health education.

The focus for writing has been persuasive writing and in particular speech writing and speaking for our older classes. I am sure our students can be very persuasive when they want to. I look forward to hearing the finalists present their speeches tonight.

I’m sure I don’t have to remind you that we have a Teacher Only Day tomorrow. This is the last of the four days allocated to us by the MOE for professional development around the new Mathematics curriculum. We anticipate there will be fewer TODs in 2027 while the secondary schools get their PLD.

We have some changes in staff for Term 3. Mrs Kerri Egelmeer will be replacing Miss Nicole Sarginson in Year 5 as Miss Sarginson takes Term 3 & 4 as leave to go overseas. Whaea Flo Vailima and Mrs Sophie Hartnett will cover a Year 4 class while Miss Morgan Jones goes on maternity leave, and Mrs Samantha Tino and Mrs Joan Murphy will be opening an additional class for our Year 0 students in Aroha. We are so lucky to have been able to cover these positions with such capable staff during a time where there is a significant shortage of teachers available.

We are very excited about celebrating Matariki in our last week of term. There will be several activities throughout the week and the highlight will be holding our Grandparent’s day on Friday 3 July. We always look forward to welcoming our grandparents into our school.

This is a longer term, 11 weeks, and the weather is definitely colder. There has been a lot of illness already with colds and tummy bugs. Please stay warm and well.

Nga manaakitanga ki a koe.

First Reconciliation

Congratulations to those tamariki who completed their first reconciliation last Wednesday 10th June. It was a beautiful, reflective evening led by Father Robert and supported by 5 other priests from the Auckland Diocese. We wish you all the best as you continue your sacramental journey.

Sacred Heart of Jesus

On Friday 12th June we celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The day began with Rooms 7, 8, 9 & 10 attending Mass alongside our Parish community. The children led two lovely songs, readings and prayers of the faithful. In the afternoon the whole school gathered to be led by our Year 4’s in a beautiful liturgy centred on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. They shared facts and ways we can be more like Jesus. It was a lovely reflective way to end the week.

Our next School Board Meeting is Wednesday 12th August at 7:00 pm

Our Board has recently discussed school policy and procedures around parents taking photos at school and during school events. With upcoming school performances for Grandparents’ Day we would like to remind our community of our policy.

Parents, grandparents, and whānau are welcome to take photos and short video recordings during Grandparents Day for personal family use. Please ensure that any photos or videos focus on your own child(ren) and family members, and avoid capturing or sharing images of other children without their parents’ permission. We ask everyone to respect the privacy of all students and families and not share photos or videos containing other children on social media or other public platforms. – Please see below for the full policy.

Recording Photos, Video, and Sound

At St Joseph’s Catholic School Pukekohe, we record and share photos, video, and sound in a safe and respectful way to ensure we do not breach the Privacy Act 2020, the Copyright Act 1994, the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015, the Crimes Act 1961, and our codes of conduct and bullying policies. These conditions apply to recording and sharing photos, video, and sound on school grounds, at school-related events or activities, and online.

Key requirements

No one may:

  • take photos/video that amount to an intimate visual recording under the Crimes Act 1961 (s 216G)
  • record photos/video/audio in circumstances where any individual could reasonably expect privacy
  • use or share photos/video/audio in ways that breach any of our codes of conduct and/or bullying and harassment policies.

No one should take photos or record video or sound (including live streaming) in classrooms and other learning areas without permission. We recognise that anyone can take photos/videos/audio recordings at school events that are in public areas (e.g. sporting events on public fields). This does not include performances of musical concerts, shows, and plays due to copyright, and events where we have notified people attending that they may not take photos/videos/audio recordings. See Copyright.

School processes

Using a hidden device to record photos, video, or sound is not allowed at school or school-related activities or events. If a school meeting or phone call is recorded, all participants are informed in advance and told how the recording will be used.

Our staff inform students before taking photos or making a recording of them, or discuss this with parents/caregivers if needed. Students can choose not to be included in photos or recordings, or parents/caregivers can supply this preference. Also see Distance Learning.

Before sharing recorded material, the school seeks permission from parents/caregivers, students, and staff members who appear in the images or recordings. We also expect our school community to consider privacy before sharing recordings that contain other people’s personal information. See Public Sharing of Personal Information.

We expect everyone to use personal digital devices responsibly. Students wanting to record photos, video, or sound in class to support their learning need permission from the class teacher and must ensure they consider the privacy of others. Recordings may only be used for personal study, must not be duplicated or shared, and must be deleted when no longer needed. See Cellphones and Other Personal Digital Devices and Surrender and Retention of Digital Devices.

At St Joseph’s, we know that regular school attendance is essential for every child’s learning and success.

Our goal is for 80% of our students to attend school at least 90% of the time.

With the winter bugs doing the rounds, we want to remind you of the importance of keeping us informed when your child is unwell. While we always strive for high attendance because consistency is key to learning, your child’s health is the priority. If they are genuinely sick, the best place for them to rest and recover is at home. However, if they are just facing the “winter blues” or feeling a bit sluggish, sending them to school is often the best cure!

If your child is going to be away, please remember to notify the office via the eTAP app, the website or phone message by 9:00 AM.

St Joseph’s School Pukekohe Attendance Management Plan

For any questions or concerns regarding attendance, your child’s teacher should be the first point of contact. Requests for holidays during term time or for extended periods of absence should be submitted to the principal – Principal@stjosephs.co.nz

Understanding Your Child’s Mid-Year Report

(Please refer to the previous newsletters for Part 1 and Part 2 of Understanding Your Child’s Mid-Year Report for details about the new school report and how student achievement is communicated)

As you are aware our National Curriculum and reporting has been refreshed this year. There have been major shifts toward a highly structured, knowledge-rich approach to education, grounded in the science of learning – how the brain processes and retains information. The Mid-Year reports will be sent home with your child on Thursday 2 July.

This means there have been some big shifts in how we are reporting and what progress and achievement look like. All schools are reporting against the student’s current year level goals. Previously, students had two years to achieve a level of learning, now they have one. You may notice that your child has “dropped” as the new year level content is more difficult. This will be normal. Please stay in contact with your child’s teacher on how you can work together to support your child’s learning.

The number one thing you can do is to ensure your child is on-time for school and attending regularly. Reading is also essential for all students in Years 0-6. This can be done together with a parent or if able, independently. Limiting device use and encouraging play, conversations, outdoor recreation, chores etc is also an excellent way to support your child’s academic progress. Check out the parent portal for other ways that you can support your child’s learning too.

There will be some key vocabulary used in your child’s report that refers to their learning and next steps. Understanding this vocabulary will help you to understand how your child is progressing and how you can help at home.

Phonics Knowledge: refers to a person’s understanding of the physical speech sounds (phonemes) in a language, how they are articulated, and how they relate to the spoken and written structure of words

Phoneme: the smallest individual sound in a spoken word. It is not a letter itself, but rather a single, distinct sound you make when speaking.

Grapheme: the smallest written symbol (or group of symbols) that represents a single spoken sound in a language

Morpheme: the smallest unit of language that carries meaning. If you break it down any further, it loses its meaning entirely. Think of it as a single building block of a word.

Explicit and Implicit Evidence: Explicit evidence is directly stated in the text, leaving no room for confusion or doubt. Implicit evidence, on the other hand, is hinted at or suggested. It requires the reader to use clues and prior knowledge to read between the lines and make an inference.

Supporting Your Child’s Learning

The Ministry of Education is inviting parents and whaanau to help support improvements to their Parent Portal. The Parent Portal is a website designed for parents so they can help their tamariki at home with their learning. The survey should only take a few minutes and will help shape future updates. The survey closes on 20 June. This survey closes this Saturday.

Helping in the classroom

If you have the time and energy, we welcome parents or grandparents to volunteer to work alongside some of our youngest children for an hour a day. If you are interested, please contact Lesley Wallace – lesleyw@stjosephs.co.nz

Second-Hand Uniform Shop

The Second-hand uniform shop is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 2:30 – 3:00 pm.

All students should be in their winter uniforms.  Boys should be in darker winter weight shorts, there are still some boys wearing summer shorts.

New items can be purchased from The Uniform Shoppe on Glasgow Road, Pukekohe

Celebrations

Aroha

Last week, Aroha had an exciting visit with the Life Education Trust and Harold the Giraffe. We loved exploring the interactive learning space and discovering more about making healthy food choices for our bodies and minds. One of the highlights was singing along with Harold – our smiles said it all!

We also have exciting news to share as we send a special welcome to our newest bunch of five year olds who are just starting their school journey with us. We are so glad you are here.

Ako

The Ako Team has been busy with a variety of exciting learning experiences over the past few weeks. During our sessions with Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education Trust, students enjoyed learning about nutrition and how healthy food helps our bodies grow, move, and stay healthy. Our Year 2 students have been exploring life in the Stone Age. Rooms 8 and 9 created impressive Stone Age cave art, while Room 7 investigated what it was like to be a hunter-gatherer and used sticks and stones to create their own Stone Age tools. Across the Ako Team, students have also been enjoying writing fractured fairy tales, using their creativity to put their own unique twist on well-known stories.

Arahi

Arahi Yr5’s have been busy during the Arts creating their own puppet shows. Their brief: to write a play that shows a lesson learnt, making sure they have two characters, and a narrator. We can’t wait to see all their hard work pay off! Ka Rawe (awesome) Yr5s!
